USAG Schweinfurt
2014–17
In 2014 the US Army Garrison Schweinfurt was closed. Since World War II, over 100,000 American soldiers had served there, with up to 12,000 stationed at once. The barracks were originally built by the Wehrmacht and, after the war, temporarily housed refugees and displaced persons.
I photographed the site shortly after it was returned to German authorities with my large format camera. During my work, some buildings were again used for refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, and later Ukraine. By now most of the structures have been torn down, a process that is still ongoing.
I was drawn to how the place had been built and transformed, inspired by American New Topographics photography and German Romantic landscape painting. The project culminated in an artist book, published in an edition of five copies.
